How often should you change your car’s oil? A simple 2026 guide

It’s the question we get most in the workshop, and the short answer is: it depends. But “it depends” helps no one, so let’s get concrete.

The quick rule (and why it doesn’t always hold)

For most modern cars with synthetic oil, the change lands around 10,000–15,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first. That “once a year” matters: oil ages even if the car sits still.

The exact number is set by your service book, not by a neighbour or a YouTube video. Two cars from the same year can call for different oils and intervals.

City driving counts double

If you mostly drive around central Málaga, with short trips, traffic and cold starts, your oil has a harder life than a motorway driver’s. The engine never reaches temperature, moisture and fuel build up in the oil, and it degrades sooner.

For that use, shortening the interval is money well spent. An on-time change is one of the cheapest services there is; an engine failure is one of the most expensive.

Signs it’s already due

You don’t need to be a mechanic to spot them:

• The oil or service light comes on
• The dipstick oil is very black and thick
• The engine sounds harsher or feels less smooth
• The manual’s months or km have passed

Which oil, and why “the cheapest” won’t do

Your engine calls for a viscosity grade (e.g. 5W-30) and a specific manufacturer approval (ACEA C3, VW 504.00, MB 229.51…). Using an oil that doesn’t meet that standard can affect the particulate filter, consumption and even your warranty.
