Your car’s 4 filters made simple: when to change them and what happens if you don’t
Your car has four filters working in silence. When they clog, nothing breaks suddenly: everything just gets a little worse, you spend more, and you don’t even notice. Let’s put a face to them.
1. Oil filter
It traps the impurities the oil carries so they don’t end up scoring the engine. It’s small, cheap and critical.
It’s replaced at every oil change. Reusing an old one is the classic false economy. See our filter replacement service.
2. Air filter
The engine needs clean air to burn fuel properly. A dirty air filter chokes the engine, raises consumption and saps pull.
Guide: every 15,000–30,000 km, sooner if you drive in dusty areas.
3. Cabin filter
It cleans the air you breathe inside the car. When it clogs, dust, pollen and smells get in, windows fog up more and the A/C performs worse.
In Málaga, with the pollen and dust, it makes a big difference. Change it yearly or every 15,000 km.
4. Fuel filter
It protects the injection system, which is very expensive. A clogged fuel filter causes jerks, power loss and hard starts.
It’s especially critical on diesel. Follow the manufacturer’s interval and don’t skip it.
Key takeaways
- Oil: at every oil change
- Air: 15,000–30,000 km
- Cabin: 1 year or 15,000 km (key in Málaga)
- Fuel: per manufacturer, critical on diesel
Frequently asked questions
Can I change just one filter?
Yes. We check the state of each and tell you honestly which are due now and which can wait. We only change what’s needed.
How often for the cabin filter if I have allergies?
If you’re sensitive to pollen, change it at least once a year and consider an activated-carbon filter, which traps odours and fine particles better.
